Blüthner’s story begins in the vibrant cultural centre of Leipzig, where Julius Blüthner established his workshop after gaining citizenship in 1853. His innovations - such as the aliquot string and a cylindrical soundboard—gave the instruments a distinctive voice. Within decades, Blüthner earned royal warrants and supplied courts across Europe. Renowned artists including Mahler, Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky visited the factory and composed on Blüthner pianos.
What Makes a Blüthner Different
The Aliquot Stringing — Blüthner's Singing Secret
In the treble register, every Blüthner note has a fourth string that is never struck. Instead, it vibrates in sympathy with the others, adding a halo of overtones that gives the Blüthner its unmistakable “golden tone” — rich, warm, and luminous. Patented by Julius Blüthner in 1873, this innovation remains unique to Blüthner pianos to this day.
